Darrell K. Sweet was an American illustrator best known for his prolific cover art for science fiction and fantasy books. After earning a BFA in painting from Syracuse University in 1956 and working freelance for several years, he began painting book covers for Ballantine Books in 1974 and soon became a signature visual presence at Del Rey and other genre publishers.

Sweet developed an instantly recognizable style that combined vivid color, strong narrative clarity, and a traditional, almost classic fantasy sensibility. His images helped define the look of many beloved series, including The Wheel of Time, Xanth, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, and The Saga of Recluce.

He was widely admired for both his productivity and his ability to make a cover feel like an invitation into a larger world. Over a 40+ year career, he became one of the most familiar and influential illustrators in modern fantasy publishing.
