BERNIE WRIGHTSON
(American, 1948-2017)

Bernie Wrightson was a visionary horror illustrator and comic book artist renowned for his meticulous pen-and-ink work and gothic imagination. Co‑creator of Swamp Thing, he helped redefine horror comics in the 1970s with richly textured, atmospheric pages that set a new standard for the genre. Outside mainstream comics, Wrightson spent years crafting his landmark illustrated edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a suite of plates often hailed as a modern masterpiece of literary illustration.

His career spanned newspaper illustration, DC and Marvel comics, independent projects with The Studio in New York, and a celebrated series of collaborations with Stephen King, including Creepshow, Cycle of the Werewolf, and illustrations for The Stand. Wrightson’s macabre imagery also extended to film and media concept art for projects such as Creepshow, Ghostbusters, and The Mist, further cementing his status as one of the most influential horror illustrators of the late 20th century.
